I’ve always felt that scenting a room is quite tricky. Perfume is such a distinct extension of your unique soul, expression, and style. It’s like wearing an abstract piece of art. A blend of frequencies that catches and amplifies your charisma, the aura that you radiate and how you occupy the space around you. Quite simply, you scent your personality and what you wish to communicate to the world, in the exact same way we use fashion, cosmetics, or change our hairstyles.
That is why the fragrance brand Zenology makes so much more sense to me. Because a room, an atmosphere, can also have a soul and its own unique expression. You dress a space with interior design, color, and textiles to create a mood or an aesthetic ambiance, just as you do when dressing and scenting yourself. You can also anchor it in the unique character of the room or building. In a way, decorating the inside to harmonize with the outside applies to both rooms, buildings and people.
Zenology is the brainchild of designer Jeroen Oude Sogtoen. During his professional travels around the globe, he realized there was room to elevate the standard of room fragrances and body care products in fine boutique hotels. The olfactory experience ought to match the high aesthetic level of the visual surroundings in a beautifully designed hotel. Jeroen drew inspiration for the scents from natural environments and fragrance traditions across the world.
He founded Zenology in the early 2000s and partnered with the immensely talented perfumer Mona di Orio to embody his vision and to create the initial room and body care fragrances. First out was Camelia Sinensis, a serene, fresh, dry, and stunningly beautiful black tea scent that remains one of Zenology’s bestseller to this day.
The room fragrances, the Ambiance Trigger, are built using the same kind of exclusive ingredients as the perfumes in Lila Engel’s brand portfolio and quality perfumes in general. However, instead of resting on your skin, they are crafted to settle like a delicate, watercolor-like mist over a room, without ever being intrusive. They possess an ethereal quality and smell more like an element of nature than a traditional home fragrance.
